Louisiana Asbestos Abatement Contractor License

DEQ Accreditation at $291 Annually — Both DEQ and LSLBC Licensing Required

Louisiana requires asbestos abatement contractors to hold accreditation from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and a separate contractor license from the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC). The DEQ accreditation fee is $291 for contractor/supervisor disciplines (normal processing; an expedited-processing option is available at a higher fee). Accreditation runs for 12 months and expires on the same annual date each year.

The 8-Hour Annual Refresher Is Non-Negotiable

Every licensed asbestos contractor and supervisor must complete an 8-hour annual refresher course approved by the EPA or by a state with an EPA-approved accreditation program — the equivalent of an AHERA-accredited course. Submit your application within 90 days before your expiration date to maintain continuous accreditation without a gap. Required documentation includes your current training certificate (initial plus all refresher certificates) and a copy of a government-issued photo ID. If your original training was completed outside Louisiana, you must also provide proof of completing Louisiana's 2-hour state regulations course.

Civil Penalties Reach $32,500 Per Day; Criminal Charges Apply for False Filings

Performing asbestos abatement without valid DEQ accreditation exposes a contractor to civil fines up to $32,500 per day of violation under Louisiana RS 30:2025. Intentional or willful violations that endanger human health can trigger additional penalties up to $1 million. Filing false information on the accreditation application is a criminal offense carrying a fine up to $25,000 or up to one year in prison, or both. Apply at deq.louisiana.gov/asbestos-accreditation.
