Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Delaware Master HVACR License
Delaware contractors who design, install, service, or modify HVACR equipment — including gas piping — must hold an active Master HVACR license from the Board of Plumbing, HVAC and Refrigeration Examiners. Practicing without it violates Title 24, Chapter 18 and can result in license revocation and legal liability.
Full Scope: Heating, Cooling, Refrigeration, and Gas Piping
The Master HVACR license covers all HVACR disciplines without restriction: heating and air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, process cooling or heating systems, and gas piping. Contractors who need to work across multiple specialties — or who do gas piping — need this license, not the restricted version.
Experience, Exam, and CFC Certification
Meet one of these experience paths before applying:
- With journeyman certificate: Apprenticeship program completion plus 2 years of supervised work under a master licensee
- Without journeyman certificate: 7 years of supervised work under a master licensee
- CT or MD license holders: Reciprocity accepted without additional experience
- Other state licensees: 7 years of post-licensure experience required; unlisted jurisdictions require Board evaluation
Pass the Master HVACR exam at 70% or higher. EPA CFC certification is also required for refrigeration and air conditioning specialties.
Fees and Late Penalty
- License fee: $173 (application and renewal)
- Renewal cycle: Every 2 years, expires October 31 of even-numbered years
- Late renewal penalty: $86.50 (50% of the renewal fee) — file late but file; licenses that lapse more than 1 year require a full new application
