Detailed notes

The fine print is here.

Delaware Limited Special Electrician License

The Delaware Board of Electrical Examiners issues the Limited Special Electrician license for electricians who specialize in HVAC or pool electrical work — the two specialty areas this license covers. Three years of experience in your chosen specialty, a $127 application fee, and a Board exam are the requirements. The license expires June 30 of even-numbered years.

Specialty Scope: HVAC or Pools Only

Choose one specialty at application — your license authorizes work only in that category:

  • HVAC (air conditioning and heating)
  • Swimming pools

Working outside your licensed specialty violates Title 24, Chapter 14. Electricians who need to work in sign, elevator, refrigeration, or primary distribution electrical specialties must hold the Master Special Electrician license for those categories.

Three Years in Your Specialty Area

Three years of full-time experience in your chosen specialty under a Master Electrician, Master Special Electrician, or Limited Special Electrician is required. Pass the Limited Special Electrician exam for your designated specialty — the Board must approve your application at least 45 days before the exam date.

Insurance and Documentation at Application

  • General liability insurance: minimum $300,000. Your name must appear on the policy document even if your employer holds coverage.
  • Experience verification in your specialty area
  • Exam results from the Board-approved specialty exam

Renewal: $127, Expires June 30 of Even Years

Renew through DELPROS before June 30 of every even-numbered year. Late filing triggers a penalty of $63.50 (50% of the renewal fee); late renewals are accepted up to one year past expiration.

Continuing Education: 10 Hours, 5 on NEC Starting Second Renewal

Ten CE hours are required each biennial cycle — the same requirement as all Delaware electrician license types. Starting with your second renewal, 5 of the 10 hours must cover the National Electric Code. Late renewals trigger an automatic CE audit.
