Arkansas Residential Builder License


The Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board (ACLB) issues the Residential Builder license for contractors who construct new single-family residences or perform major structural work on existing homes where the project value exceeds $2,000 in labor and materials.


What This License Authorizes


Residential Builders may construct new single-family homes from the ground up, including all phases of construction from foundation to finish. This license covers new home construction and major structural additions to existing residences.


Application Requirements


  • Application Fee: $100 (non-refundable)
  • Examination: Must pass the Arkansas Business and Law exam administered by Prometric (exam fee: $84)
  • Financial Statement: Compiled balance sheet (less than one year old) required for corporations, LLCs, and LPs
  • Business References: Three non-supplier or banker references required

Insurance Requirements


  • General Liability Insurance: Certificate of insurance in the business name required
  • Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees
  • No Bond Required: Unlike commercial contractors, residential builders do not need a surety bond

Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Annual
  • Renewal Fee: $50
  • Late Fee: $100 if renewal is not completed by the expiration date
  • No Continuing Education Required: Maintain current insurance and financial statements throughout the license term.

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Building residential structures valued over $2,000 without a valid ACLB license is a Class A misdemeanor under Arkansas law. Fines range from $100 to $200 per offense, with each day of unlicensed work constituting a separate violation.
