Arkansas HVAC Contractor — Class B License
The Arkansas HVACR Licensing Board's Class B license authorizes full HVAC contracting — installation, maintenance, and repair — within specified per-unit capacity limits. The annual license fee is $150, the same at initial issuance and every renewal.
Capacity limits that define Class B scope
Class B contractors may work on:
- Air conditioning systems developing 15 tons or less of cooling capacity per unit
- Heating systems with a 1,000,000 BTUH or less heat input per unit
- Refrigeration systems of 15 horsepower or less per unit
These limits apply per unit, not per project. Systems that exceed any of these thresholds require a Class A Unlimited license.
Class B is full contracting, not just service work
Class B authorizes the complete contracting scope: installation, maintenance, and repair on qualifying systems. Class C (service technician) covers the same size equipment but cannot install original equipment or replace existing units. If your business includes installation, Class B — or Class A — is the required credential.
$150 annual fee, $250,000 general liability, no surety bond
The HVACR Board charges $150 per year for the Class B license at both initial issuance and annual renewal. All Class B licensees must carry at least $250,000 in general liability insurance and file proof with the board at each renewal. The HVACR rules do not require a surety bond for the Class B license.
Four CE hours per calendar year
Renewal requires 4 hours of board-approved continuing education each calendar year. Two hours must cover the mechanical code as adopted by the board; the remaining 2 hours may be any board-approved instruction.
Two years of HVACR experience, then pass the Class B exam
Applicants must have at least 2 years of experience as an HVACR contractor or an employee of one, then pass the board-approved Class B examination. Out-of-state licensees may qualify for reciprocity.
