    File through Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) and pay the $141.10 renewal fee once the supporting proof is ready.

    Typical processing time is 14 days, so do not wait until the last minute.

If you miss the deadline, the late penalty is $66.60, with a 30-day grace period.

Washington HVAC/Refrigeration Contractor Registration


Washington State does not have a separate HVAC-specific license. HVAC contractors must register as specialty contractors with the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) and comply with contractor registration requirements.

  • Registration: Must register with L&I as a specialty contractor
  • Bond: $15,000 specialty contractor surety bond required
  • Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation insurance required
  • Business License: Valid Washington UBI number required
  • Application Fee: $141.10

Scope of Work


Registered HVAC contractors may install, repair, and maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems in residential and commercial buildings.


Penalties for Non-Compliance


Performing HVAC work without valid contractor registration is subject to fines and stop-work orders from L&I.
