Washington Elevator Contractor License


The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) licenses elevator contractors under the Elevator Safety Act. A valid license is required to install, alter, repair, or maintain elevators and conveyance devices.


Requirements


  • Examination: Must pass the L&I elevator contractor exam
  • Experience: Documented elevator installation and maintenance experience
  • Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation insurance required
  • Application Fee: $92.20

Scope of Work


Licensed elevator contractors may install, alter, repair, service, and maintain elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, and other conveyance devices throughout Washington.

Installing or servicing elevators without a valid license is a violation subject to fines and enforcement action by L&I.
