Washington Fire Protection Contractor License


Washington State requires fire protection contractors to be licensed through the Washington State Patrol - State Fire Marshal's Office (not L&I). This covers fire sprinkler system installation and maintenance.


Requirements


  • Examination: Must pass applicable fire protection exam
  • NICET Certification: NICET certification required for applicable systems
  • Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation insurance required
  • Application Fee: $100

Renewal Information


  • Renewal Period: Annual (every 12 months)
  • Renewal Fee: $125–$1,500 per year depending on license level (Level 1 minimum $125/yr; Level 3 up to $1,500/yr)
  • Late Penalty: At director's discretion
  • Grace Period: 30 days after expiration

Scope of Work


Licensed fire protection contractors may design, install, inspect, test, and maintain fire sprinkler systems and related equipment throughout Washington.

Installing fire protection systems without proper licensing is a violation subject to fines and enforcement action by the State Fire Marshal.
