Utah HVAC Contractor License (S350)


The Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) issues the S350 HVAC Contractor license, authorizing holders to perform heating, ventilation, and air conditioning installation, repair, and maintenance work.


What This License Authorizes


S350 licensees may perform fabrication and installation of complete warm air heating systems, air conditioning systems, and ventilating systems. This includes ductwork, furnaces, heat pumps, air handlers, condensing units, and related components for residential and commercial properties.


Requirements


  • Experience: Relevant trade experience as determined by DOPL
  • Pre-License Training: 25-hour pre-licensure course from an approved provider
  • Exam: Utah Contractor Business and Law Exam

Bond and Insurance Requirements


  • Surety Bond: $15,000 bond required, filed with DOPL
  • General Liability Insurance: Minimum $100,000 per occurrence and $300,000 aggregate with DOPL as certificate holder
  • Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees

  • Application Fee: $210
  • Renewal Fee: $128 (every 2 years)
  • Late Penalty: Late renewals incur a $20 penalty fee for the first 30 days

Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years (all contractor licenses expire November 30 of odd-numbered years)
  • Continuing Education: 6 hours required per renewal cycle, of which at least 3 hours must be directly related to HVAC system installation, repair, or replacement, including 1 hour on energy conservation
  • Bond and insurance must remain current throughout the license term

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing HVAC contractor work in Utah without a valid license is a Class A misdemeanor. Civil penalties include fines up to $1,000 for a first offense, $2,000 for a second, and $2,000 per day for continued violations.
