Detailed notes

Utah General Building Contractor License (B100)
The B100 is Utah's broadest building contractor classification. Holders may perform or supervise new construction, additions, alterations, and remodeling across commercial and residential buildings — and subcontract specialty trade work to appropriately licensed contractors. Operating without a valid B100 on covered projects is a Class A misdemeanor under Utah Code 58-55-503.
B100 Scope Spans New Construction Through Full Commercial Renovation
B100 licensees may perform any type of building construction work, including structural, electrical, mechanical, and finish work. Applicants must show at least 4,000 hours (roughly two years) of paid construction experience, including time in a supervisory or managerial role.
Bond, Insurance, and Application Fees
- Application fee: $175
- Surety bond: $50,000 filed with DOPL — higher than the $15,000 required for specialty licenses
- General liability insurance: minimum $1,000,000 per occurrence / $3,000,000 aggregate with DOPL as certificate holder
- Workers' compensation: required if you have employees
Biennial Renewal — All Utah Contractor Licenses Expire November 30 of Odd Years
The renewal fee is $128. DOPL sends renewal notices at least 60 days before expiration. Renewing after the deadline but within 30 days incurs a $20 late penalty. Each renewal cycle requires 6 hours of continuing education, with at least 3 hours in live in-class attendance.
Unlicensed Building Work Carries Criminal and Civil Penalties
Performing covered building contractor work without a valid DOPL license is a Class A misdemeanor. Civil penalties under Utah Code 58-55-503 run up to $1,000 for a first offense, $2,000 for a second, and $2,000 per day for each subsequent day of continued violation.
