Detailed notes

Utah Fire Suppression Systems Contractor License (S370)

Contractors who install, design, or maintain fire suppression systems in Utah must hold an S370 license from DOPL. Installing these systems without a valid license is a Class A misdemeanor under Utah Code 58-55-503.

S370 Covers Sprinkler and Standpipe Systems — with Two Scope Exclusions

The S370 classification authorizes layout, fabrication, and installation of water, steam, gas, and chemical-based fire suppression systems. Two scopes are excluded: connecting to a potable sanitary water supply requires a licensed plumbing contractor (P200 or P201), and installation of suppression systems in hoods above cooking appliances falls outside S370.

Bond, Insurance, and Application Fees

  • Application fee: $175
  • Surety bond: $15,000 filed with DOPL
  • General liability insurance: minimum $1,000,000 per occurrence / $3,000,000 aggregate with DOPL as certificate holder
  • Workers' compensation: required if you have employees

Biennial Renewal — All Utah Contractor Licenses Expire November 30 of Odd Years

The renewal fee is $128. DOPL sends renewal notices at least 60 days before expiration. Renewing after the deadline but within 30 days incurs a $20 late penalty. Each renewal cycle requires 6 hours of continuing education, with at least 3 hours in live in-class attendance.

Unlicensed Installation Carries Criminal and Civil Penalties

Installing fire suppression systems without a valid S370 is a Class A misdemeanor. Civil penalties under Utah Code 58-55-503 run up to $1,000 for a first offense, $2,000 for a second, and $2,000 per day for each subsequent day of continued violation.
