South Dakota Master Plumber License
The South Dakota Plumbing Commission issues the Master Plumber license, the highest individual trade license for plumbers in the state. Master plumbers may serve as the plumber of record for a licensed plumbing contractor.
What This License Authorizes
A Master Plumber may perform all types of plumbing work and may serve as the designated plumber of record for a plumbing contractor business. This is the prerequisite individual license for operating a plumbing contracting business in South Dakota.
Experience Requirements
Applicants must have six years of experience as a plumbing contractor, plumber, or plumber's apprentice, with at least two of those years as a plumbing contractor or journeyman plumber. A minimum of 1,900 hours per year during those six years is required.
Examination Requirements
Applicants must pass the master plumber examination. The exam fee is $100.

- Continuing Education: 4 hours required every two years, with at least the required hours related to the Uniform Plumbing Code.
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing plumbing work without a valid license is a Class 2 misdemeanor under SDCL 36-25. The Plumbing Commission may investigate complaints and refer violations for prosecution.
