South Dakota Maintenance Electrician License


The South Dakota Electrical Commission issues the Maintenance Electrician license for individuals who perform electrical maintenance and repair work on the premises of their employer. This is a limited-scope license that does not authorize contracting or working at other locations.


What This License Authorizes


A Maintenance Electrician may perform electrical maintenance, repair, and minor installation work only on the premises owned or operated by their employer. This license does not authorize the holder to contract for electrical work or perform installations at other locations.


Requirements


Applicants must demonstrate relevant electrical maintenance experience and pass the maintenance electrician examination. The license is tied to employment at a specific facility or employer.

  • Biennial Renewal Fee: $80

Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years (expires June 30 of even-numbered years)
  • Renewal Fee: $80
  • Continuing Education: 16 hours required per renewal cycle, with a minimum of 8 hours on the National Electrical Code.

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing electrical work beyond the scope of the maintenance electrician license or without a valid license is a Class 1 misdemeanor under SDCL 36-16.
