South Dakota Journeyman Plumber License


The South Dakota Plumbing Commission issues the Journeyman Plumber license to qualified individuals who have completed the required apprenticeship period and passed the state examination.


What This License Authorizes


A Journeyman Plumber may perform plumbing installation, repair, and maintenance work under the authority of a licensed plumbing contractor. The journeyman may work independently on job sites but must be associated with a licensed contractor to contract for work.


Experience Requirements


Applicants must have two years of experience as an apprentice plumber, with at least 1,900 hours per year during those two years.


Examination Requirements


Applicants must pass the journeyman plumber examination. The exam fee is $100.

Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Annually (expires December 31)
  • Renewal Fee: $100
  • Continuing Education: 4 hours required every two years, with at least the required hours related to the Uniform Plumbing Code.

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing plumbing work without a valid license is a Class 2 misdemeanor under SDCL 36-25. Penalties include fines and potential criminal prosecution.
