South Dakota Class B Electrician License
The South Dakota Electrical Commission issues the Class B Electrician license, a residential and farmstead-focused individual trade license. This license is one step above journeyman and authorizes the holder to perform residential and farmstead electrical work under a licensed electrical contractor.
What This License Authorizes
A Class B Electrician may perform all electrical wiring, installation, and repair work on residential and farmstead properties. Class B Electricians work under the authority of a licensed electrical contractor and may not independently contract for commercial work without upgrading to an Electrical Contractor license.
Experience Requirements
Applicants must have at least two years of experience working under a Class B Electrician or Electrical Contractor, with a minimum of one year in residential and farmstead wiring.
Bond Requirements
- Undertaking: $10,000 bond deposited with the State Electrical Commission (same requirement as Electrical Contractor)
- Undertaking Deposit Fee: $50 at time of execution and biennially at renewal

Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years (expires June 30 of even-numbered years)
- Continuing Education: 16 hours required per renewal cycle, with a minimum of 8 hours on the National Electrical Code. Only 8 hours may be from correspondence or online courses.
Path to Electrical Contractor
Class B Electricians may upgrade to an Electrical Contractor license by completing at least one additional year in commercial wiring under the employment and supervision of a licensed electrical contractor.
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing electrical work without a valid license is a Class 1 misdemeanor under SDCL 36-16. Individuals may face fines and criminal prosecution.
