Pittsburgh Contractor Registration
The City of Pittsburgh requires general contractors to hold an active PLI general contractor license before performing covered work in the city.
Requirements
- PA HIC Registration: Required for residential work where Pittsburgh's licensing rules call for the state registration
- Insurance: Certificates of insurance must follow PLI's required format
- License Fee: $90 for the initial license and $90 for annual renewal
Renewal Information
- Renewal Period: Licenses expire 365 days from issuance
- Renewal Fee: $90
- Late Fee: Pittsburgh's current fee schedule says the trade-license late fee does not apply to general contractors
Relationship to PA State Registration
Pittsburgh's contractor rules can overlap with Pennsylvania's Home Improvement Contractor Registration for residential work. Contractors working on private residences should confirm when both credentials are required.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
- Building permits may be denied
- Stop-work orders may be issued for unlicensed work
- Insurance or tax-compliance problems can block issuance or renewal
