Detailed notes

The fine print is here.

Oregon Residential General Contractor License

The Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB) issues the Residential General Contractor license, which authorizes holders to perform or supervise general construction of residential structures, including new construction, additions, and remodeling of homes and small residential buildings.

What This License Authorizes

Residential General Contractors may perform any construction activity on residential structures, including framing, roofing, siding, and overseeing specialty trades on a jobsite. They may subcontract specialty work to appropriately licensed subcontractors.

Bond and Insurance Requirements

  • Surety Bond: $25,000 bond required, filed with the CCB
  • General Liability Insurance: Minimum $500,000 per occurrence required
  • Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees

Training and Examination

The current CCB licensing page says the Responsible Managing Individual must complete at least 16 hours of pre-license training from an approved provider and pass the Oregon contractor exam, unless a listed alternative qualification path applies.

Renewal Process

  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years
  • Renewal Fee: $400
  • Continuing education: Unless exempt, residential contractors need 3 hours of CCB laws, regulations, and business practices classes, plus 5 hours of other approved courses if licensed six or more years or 13 hours of other approved courses if licensed less than six years

Compliance Risk

The CCB says residential contractors cannot renew until the agency has proof that the continuing education requirement was met. The CCB also investigates unlicensed contracting and work performed without the required bond or liability insurance.
