Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Minnesota Mechanical Contractor Bond Registration (HVAC)
Minnesota does not issue a state mechanical contractor license. Instead, the DLI requires mechanical contractors who install and service heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems to register a $25,000 surety bond. Minnesota's extreme winters make HVAC one of the most critical trades in the state.
Requirements
- Experience: Must hold a master mechanical license or employ a licensed master mechanic
- Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation required
- Surety Bond: $25,000 surety bond required
- Bond Filing Fee: $100 (biennial)
Continuing Education
No continuing education is required at the state level for the mechanical contractor bond registration. Individual master mechanic licensees have separate CE requirements.
Renewal Information
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years
- Bond Filing Fee: $100
- No Late Penalty: No documented late fee for bond registration
EPA Section 608
EPA Section 608 certification is a separate federal requirement for technicians handling refrigerants. It is not part of the DLI bond registration process.
Scope of Work
Covers installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems, boilers, hydronic heating, and refrigeration equipment throughout Minnesota.
