Kentucky Master HVAC Contractor License
The Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (DHBC) Division of HVAC issues the Master HVAC Contractor license under KRS 198B and 815 KAR 8:010. In Kentucky, the master HVAC license and contractor license are one and the same — a Master HVAC Contractor is authorized to both perform and contract for HVAC work.
What This License Authorizes
A Master HVAC Contractor may design, install, alter, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. The license holder may contract for HVAC work and supervise journeyman HVAC mechanics working under their license.
Insurance Requirements
- General Liability Insurance: Minimum $500,000 per occurrence required per KRS 198B.668
- Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees per KRS Chapter 342
Examination Requirements
Applicants must pass two examinations: the ICC mechanical examination and a Kentucky-specific HVAC law and business examination. Candidates must demonstrate qualifying experience before sitting for the exams.
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Annual (expires last day of birth month)
- Renewal Fee: $250
- Late Restoration Fee: $125 if filed after the last day of the renewal month but within 60 days
- Continuing Education: 6 hours annually from a DHBC-approved provider per 815 KAR 2:010
- Application Fee: $375 (initial, prorated based on application date)
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing HVAC contracting work without a valid DHBC license violates KRS 198B. Penalties include fines and potential criminal prosecution. Unlicensed HVAC installations may be ordered removed or corrected at the violator's expense.
