    Finish the CE first

    Complete the 6 required hours before you start the renewal.

    File with the board

    File through Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (DHBC) — Electrical Division and pay the $100.00 renewal fee once the supporting proof is ready.

    Typical processing time is 30 days, so do not wait until the last minute.

If you miss the deadline, the late penalty is $50.00, with a 60-day grace period.

Kentucky Journeyman Electrician License


The Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (DHBC) Electrical Division issues the Journeyman Electrician license under KRS 227A and 815 KAR 35:060. A Journeyman Electrician is qualified to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems under the supervision of a Master Electrician.


What This License Authorizes


A Journeyman Electrician may perform electrical installations, alterations, and repairs under the general supervision of a licensed Master Electrician. Journeyman electricians work for licensed Electrical Contractors.


Examination Requirements


Applicants must pass the ICC Journeyman Electrician examination. Candidates typically need at least four years of electrical experience or completion of a recognized apprenticeship program.


Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Biennial (expires last day of birth month)
  • Renewal Fee: $100 biennial renewal
  • Late Fee: $50 if filed after the last day of the renewal month but within 60 days
  • Continuing Education: 6 hours from a DHBC-approved provider (no more than 2 hours may be safety-related topics)
  • Application Fee: $100 (initial)

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Working as an electrician without a valid DHBC license violates KRS 227A. Penalties include fines and potential criminal prosecution.
