Kentucky Electrical Contractor License
The Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (DHBC) Electrical Division issues the Electrical Contractor license under KRS 227A and 815 KAR 35:060. This license authorizes a business to engage in the trade of electrical contracting in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
What This License Authorizes
An Electrical Contractor license permits the holder to contract for and perform electrical installations, alterations, and repairs. The contractor must employ at least one licensed Master Electrician who supervises all electrical work performed by the business.
Insurance Requirements
- General Liability Insurance: Minimum $500,000 per occurrence required
- Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees per KRS Chapter 342
Examination Requirements
The business owner or responsible managing employee must hold a valid Kentucky Master Electrician license, which requires passing the ICC Master Electrician examination.
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Biennial (expires last day of birth month)
- Renewal Fee: $400 biennial renewal
- Late Fee: $50 if filed after the last day of the renewal month but within 60 days
- Continuing Education: 6 hours from a DHBC-approved provider
- Application Fee: $400 (initial)
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing electrical contracting work without a valid DHBC license violates KRS 227A. Penalties include fines and potential criminal prosecution. Unlicensed work may void insurance coverage and expose the contractor to personal liability for property damage or injuries.
