Kentucky Fire Protection Sprinkler Contractor License
Installing, altering, or maintaining fire protection sprinkler systems in Kentucky requires a DHBC contractor license under KRS 198B.595 and 815 KAR 7:080. The license costs $250 to apply and $250 to renew each year. Your company must employ at least one Certificate of Competency holder — that person holds the technical credential that qualifies your crew to do the work.
Certificate of Competency
The Certificate of Competency is the technical credential required under KRS 198B.570. Qualifying requires NICET Level III certification in fire sprinkler systems — a third-party credential, not a DHBC-administered exam. The certificate holder must remain in your employ while the contractor license is active. Renew the certificate separately at $125 per year.
Insurance
KRS 198B.595 requires proof of liability insurance of at least $250,000 per person and $500,000 per accident, plus workers' compensation insurance per KRS Chapter 342.
Fees and Renewal
- Initial contractor license fee: $250
- Annual renewal fee: $250
- Certificate of Competency renewal: $125/year
Both the contractor license and the certificate expire annually on the last day of the holder's birth month. Submit renewals at dhbc.ky.gov.
Penalties
Installing sprinkler systems without a valid DHBC license violates KRS 198B. The DHBC can revoke, suspend, or refuse to renew your license, or seek injunctive relief under KRS 198B.625.
