Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Kentucky Boiler and Pressure Vessel Contractor License
Before any crew member installs, repairs, or alters a boiler or pressure vessel in Kentucky, at least one person in the company must hold a valid DHBC Boiler Contractor license. That license holder is the primary responsible party for all work employees perform. The license is governed by KRS 236 and 815 KAR 15:080, with the DHBC Boiler Section at 500 Mero Street, Frankfort as the issuing authority.
Examination
Pass the state boiler examination with a minimum score of 70 percent per 815 KAR 15:080 Section 1(2). A passing score is valid for three years, so if you tested recently you can apply without retesting.
Fees and Renewal
- Initial license fee: $250, payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer
- Annual renewal fee: $175, due on or before the last day of your birth month
Renewals run on an annual cycle and expire on the last day of the licensee's birth month. Submit renewal at dhbc.ky.gov before that date.
Insurance
General liability insurance is not required for the boiler contractor license under 815 KAR 15:080 — this distinguishes it from most other DHBC contractor categories. Workers' compensation is required if you have employees under KRS Chapter 342.
Penalties for Unlicensed Work
Installing or repairing boilers and pressure vessels without a valid DHBC license violates KRS 236. Unlicensed work may be ordered corrected or removed at the violator's expense.
