Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Indiana Plumbing Commission Issues Statewide Contractor License
The Indiana Plumbing Commission issues the plumbing contractor license, and operating without one violates IC 25-28.5-1-11. The state license covers all of Indiana; local jurisdictions may require registration with their plumbing inspector for permit purposes, but cannot impose a separate license requirement under IC 25-28.5-1-33.
$50 Application Fee, $100 Biennial Renewal — Expires December 31 of Odd Years
The initial application fee is $50 and the biennial renewal fee is $100. All contractor licenses expire on December 31 of odd-numbered years, regardless of issue date. Expired renewals received before March 1 carry a $15 late fee; renewals submitted after March 1 are no longer eligible for the $15 late fee and require reinstatement — contact the Commission at in.gov/pla/professions/plumbing-home.
Written Exam Required; No Continuing Education for Renewal
To obtain the contractor license, you must pass the Indiana plumbing contractor examination under IC 25-28.5-1-15. Applications must be reviewed and approved for examination eligibility by the Commission before you can register for the test. No continuing education is required for routine biennial renewal — IC 25-28.5 contains no CE mandate, and IC 25-1-4-1 prohibits CE requirements unless specifically authorized by statute.
Three License Tiers; No Bond Required
Indiana plumbing credentials run Apprentice → Journeyman Plumber → Plumbing Contractor. The contractor license authorizes you to contract directly for plumbing work. No surety bond is required for the standard contractor license under IC 25-28.5. A bonded Temporary Plumbing Contractor license applies only in emergency succession situations under IC 25-28.5-1-18.5.
