IDEM Issues All Indiana Asbestos Abatement Contractor Licenses
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) issues this license under 326 IAC 18, and no contractor may legally perform asbestos abatement, removal, or encapsulation in Indiana without it. Contractors who work without a valid license face civil penalties of up to $25,000 per day per violation under IC 13-30-4-1, with criminal liability for knowing violations under IC 13-30-10-1.5.
$150 Application Fee, $150 Annual Renewal
Both the initial application fee and annual renewal fee are $150, set by 326 IAC 18-2.1-7. Submit State Form 52575 (Application for Asbestos Contractor License) to IDEM by mail, fax, email, or hand delivery. IDEM processes individual licenses in a minimum of two weeks. Licenses expire annually — once expired, online renewal is unavailable and a new application is required.
IDEM-Approved Training and Annual Refresher Required
Your company's designated representative must complete an IDEM-approved asbestos contractor/supervisor training course and pass the provider's written exam. At renewal, one full day (8 hours) of IDEM-approved refresher training completed within the previous 12 months is required under 326 IAC 18-2.1-4. Submit training certificates with every application and renewal.
Asbestos Liability Insurance Required; No Bond
326 IAC 18-2.1-2 requires proof of asbestos liability insurance of at least $500,000, issued by a carrier licensed by the Indiana Department of Insurance to provide asbestos coverage. No surety bond is required. General commercial liability insurance does not satisfy this requirement — the policy must specifically cover asbestos abatement operations.
