Illinois Roofing Contractor License
Illinois is one of the few states that require a specific state-level license for roofing contractors. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) administers the Roofing Industry Licensing Act.
Requirements
- Examination: Must pass the IDFPR roofing contractor exam
- Experience: Documented roofing experience required
- Insurance: General liability ($250,000 property damage + $500,000 personal injury) and workers' compensation insurance required
- Bond: $25,000 surety bond required (unlimited license) or $10,000 (limited license) per 68 IAC 1460.30
- Application Fee: $125

- Restoration Fee: $50 per 68 IAC 1460.80
- Grace Period: 30 days after expiration
Scope of Work
Licensed roofing contractors may install, repair, and replace roofing systems on residential and commercial structures throughout the state of Illinois.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Operating without a valid roofing license is a Class A misdemeanor. Repeat offenses may be charged as a Class 4 felony with fines up to $25,000. IDFPR may also issue cease and desist orders.
