What the License Covers

The Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) issues elevator mechanic licenses under the Elevator Safety and Regulation Act (225 ILCS 312) and 41 Ill. Adm. Code Part 1000. The license authorizes installation, maintenance, repair, and modernization of elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, and other conveyances — no one may perform this work in Illinois without it.

$250 Application and Biennial Renewal

Both the initial application and biennial renewal carry a $250 fee (41 Ill. Adm. Code 1000.100(a)). The license renews every two years. If your license lapses, OSFM allows restoration within one year of expiration: pay the $250 renewal fee plus a $50 restoration surcharge ($300 total) and complete the standard CE requirement (1000.110(d)). Beyond one year, the license is terminated and a new application is required.

8 CE Hours per Cycle — Including 2 on Code Updates

Renewal requires proof of at least 8 hours of continuing education completed within the year immediately preceding renewal (41 Ill. Adm. Code 1000.110(b)). A minimum of 2 of those hours must cover code updates (225 ILCS 312/60(d)). Confirm approved CE providers through sfm.illinois.gov before registering.

Penalties: Up to $2,000 per Occurrence for Unlicensed Work

Performing elevator work without a valid license carries a fine of up to $2,000 per occurrence under 41 Ill. Adm. Code 1000.170(e)(2)(A). Each distinct act of unlicensed work is a separate occurrence.
