The fine print is here.
Georgia Electrical Contractor License (Unrestricted)
Any contractor performing electrical work in Georgia needs a license from the State Construction Industry Licensing Board under O.C.G.A. §43-14 — Unrestricted (Class II) for all types of electrical work, or Restricted (Class I) if your scope is limited to single-phase systems at 200 amperes or less.
Class I vs. Class II: scope determines your classification
Choose your license class at application:
- Class I (Restricted): Single-phase electrical work at or below 200 amperes at the service drop or service lateral. Reduces the exam scope but permanently limits your work authorization to that range.
- Class II (Unrestricted): No amperage or phase restriction. Covers all residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems.
Upgrading from Class I to Class II requires passing the examination elements for the unrestricted scope.
Renew every 2 years
Licenses are biennial. Renewing late triggers the Board's late renewal window; missing that window entirely requires reinstatement and may require re-examination. Current renewal fees and deadline dates are published at sos.ga.gov/georgia-state-board-electrical-contractors.
Fees and renewal
- Application fee: $110
- Biennial renewal: $100
- Late renewal penalty: $50
Licenses renew every two years. Renewing late triggers the Board's late renewal window; missing that window entirely requires reinstatement and may require re-examination. Current fee amounts and deadline dates are published at sos.ga.gov/georgia-state-board-electrical-contractors.
8 CE hours required per renewal cycle
Complete 4 hours of Board-approved continuing education each year — 8 hours per two-year cycle. Check the Board's approved provider list for qualifying courses.
Unlicensed electrical work is a misdemeanor
Performing electrical contracting without a valid license violates O.C.G.A. §43-14. The Board can seek injunctive relief to halt unlicensed work independent of any criminal prosecution.
Apply through the GOALS portal
Apply and renew online through the GOALS portal at secure.sos.state.ga.us. The application requires criminal history disclosure — any prior felony or misdemeanor conviction must be disclosed to the Board before licensure.
