Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Florida Fire Sprinkler Contractor License
Florida does not use one catch-all sprinkler license. The residential fire sprinkler category most contractors ask about is Fire Protection System Contractor IV, which is regulated by the Division of State Fire Marshal, not DBPR. This is the credential for NFPA 13D work in detached one-family homes, detached two-family homes, and mobile homes.
What the application really turns on
- Existing plumbing license: Florida requires a Contractor IV applicant to already hold a certified plumbing contractor license under chapter 489.
- 40-hour training requirement: The applicant must also complete a State Fire Marshal-accepted training program of at least 40 contact hours on the applicable NFPA 13D installation standard.
- Written exam: Fire protection system contractor applicants still sit for the state written examination, and the statute says the test covers layout, fabrication, installation, alteration, repair, inspection, and business and financial management.
- Business qualification and insurance: The licensing page requires the application to include business-registration proof and insurance evidence. The contractor application packet says Contractor IV applicants must carry at least $250,000 in liability coverage, plus workers' compensation compliance.
Fees, renewal, and CE
- Initial application fee: Florida charges $300 for the Contractor IV certificate application.
- Examination fee: The application packet separately lists a $100 contractor exam fee.
- Renewal cycle: Certificates expire every two years at midnight on June 30.
- Renewal fee: The biennial renewal fee is $150 for each class of certificate.
- Continuing education: Contractor IV certificate holders need 14 contact hours of continuing education during each biennial licensure period, centered on the applicable NFPA fire sprinkler documents.
- Missed renewal: If you miss June 30, the certificate becomes inoperative immediately. A late restoration filed within 90 days can be processed on payment of the renewal fee. After that, Florida treats it more like a new filing and may require examination or reexamination.
What this license actually covers
Section 633.102 says Contractor IV is limited to the layout, fabrication, installation, inspection, alteration, repair, and service of automatic fire sprinkler systems for detached one-family dwellings, detached two-family dwellings, and mobile homes. It does not cover apartments, condominiums, assisted living facilities, or other connected residential buildings. The statute ties the scope directly to NFPA 13D.
What happens if you work without it
Florida treats unlicensed fire protection contracting as its own offense. Acting as a fire protection contractor without the required certificate is a second-degree misdemeanor, and the State Fire Marshal can also suspend or revoke the credential and impose administrative fines of up to $10,000 in a single proceeding.
