Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Florida Certified Commercial Pool Contractor License
The commercial pool license is the Florida category for public and commercial pool construction, and DBPR keeps it separate for a reason. If your work includes public pools, the application expects commercial-pool-specific experience, not just generic pool or service history.
What the license covers
DBPR says a certified commercial pool contractor may construct, repair, and service commercial swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas; install or replace pool equipment as needed; and perform the related layout, excavation, steelwork, shell construction, perimeter and filter piping, decks, equipment rooms, and package pool heaters within the commercial-pool scope. The category also includes the scope of a swimming pool/spa servicing contractor.
What the application turns on
- Application fee by filing window: $145 from September 1 of an odd year through April 30 of an even year, and $245 from May 1 of an even year through August 31 of an odd year.
- Fingerprints: DBPR requires electronic fingerprints for the initial filing.
- Financial responsibility: The packet requires a FICO-derived credit report, with the 14-hour financial-responsibility course only if the score is below 660.
- Base experience path: The application uses the standard certified-contractor qualification paths, including the common 4-year worker or foreman route with at least 1 year as a foreman.
- Commercial-pool-specific experience: The packet also requires at least 1 year of experience in the construction of public or commercial pools.
- Upgrade routes: An active certified pool/spa servicing contractor with 4 years of certification, or an active certified residential pool contractor with 1 year of certification, may use the commercial-pool upgrade method.
Renewal and CE
- Renewal cycle: August 31 of even-numbered years.
- Renewal fee: $205, plus $50 when the license qualifies a business entity.
- Continuing education: 14 hours each renewal cycle, including 1 hour of pool electrical requirements.
Working without the right category
Florida's unlicensed-contracting statute uses the same basic sequence here as in the other CILB construction categories. A first violation is generally a first-degree misdemeanor. Repeat violations and violations committed during a declared state of emergency can escalate to third-degree felonies.
