Connecticut Sheet Metal Contractor License (SM-1)
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) issues the SM-1 Sheet Metal Contractor license under the Heating, Piping, Cooling, Sheet Metal and Solar Work Examining Board. This license authorizes the holder to perform sheet metal work in connection with heating, cooling, and ventilation systems.
What This License Authorizes
SM-1 license holders may perform, supervise, and contract for sheet metal fabrication and installation work related to HVAC systems, including ductwork, ventilation systems, flashing, gutters, and other sheet metal components used in heating and cooling installations.
Examination and Experience Requirements
Applicants must pass both the Connecticut Business and Law Exam and a Trade-Specific Sheet Metal Exam. Applicants must have at least two years of experience as a licensed SM-2 journeyperson or equivalent experience and training in sheet metal work.
Continuing Education
Connecticut does not currently require continuing education for Sheet Metal license holders.

Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing sheet metal work without a valid DCP license is a Class B misdemeanor in Connecticut, punishable by up to six months in prison, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. The DCP may also impose civil penalties and issue cease-and-desist orders against unlicensed operators.
