Connecticut Unlimited Electrical Contractor License (E-1)

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) issues the E-1 Unlimited Electrical Contractor license, which authorizes the holder to perform all types of electrical work as defined in Connecticut General Statutes. This is the highest-level electrical license available in Connecticut.

What This License Authorizes

E-1 license holders may perform, supervise, and contract for all electrical work including residential, commercial, and industrial wiring, panel installations, service upgrades, and all other electrical installations. Odd-numbered licenses (E-1) are contractor licenses, while even-numbered licenses (E-2) are journeyperson licenses.

Examination Requirements

Applicants must pass two examinations: the Connecticut Business and Law Exam and a Trade-Specific Exam covering the National Electrical Code and Connecticut electrical regulations. Applicants must have at least two years of experience as a licensed E-2 journeyperson or equivalent experience and training.

Continuing Education

  • 4 hours per year of approved continuing education required
  • Courses must be approved by the CT Electrical Board
  • CE hours must be completed by June 30 each year
  • First-time renewals are exempt from the CE requirement
  • Retain certificates of completion for at least 4 years for audit purposes

Renewal Process

  • Renewal Period: Annually, expires September 30
  • Renewal Fee: $150
  • Renew Online: Through the eLicense portal at elicense.ct.gov

Consequences of Operating Without a License

Performing electrical work without a valid DCP license is a Class B misdemeanor in Connecticut, punishable by up to six months in prison, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. The DCP may also impose civil penalties and issue cease-and-desist orders.
