Connecticut Unlimited Plumbing Contractor License (P-1)
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) issues the P-1 Unlimited Plumbing Contractor license, which authorizes the holder to perform all plumbing and piping work as defined in Connecticut General Statutes Section 20-330. This is the highest-level plumbing license in Connecticut.
What This License Authorizes
P-1 license holders may perform, supervise, and contract for all plumbing and piping work including water supply systems, drainage systems, fixtures, water heaters, gas piping, and all related plumbing installations in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
Examination and Experience Requirements
Applicants must pass both the Connecticut Business and Law Exam and a Trade-Specific Plumbing Exam. To qualify for the P-1 examination, applicants must have at least two years of experience as a licensed P-2 Unlimited Journeyperson Plumber or equivalent experience and training. The journeyperson path requires completion of a registered apprenticeship program (approximately 16,000 hours total).
Continuing Education
- 5 credit hours every two years for Unlimited Contractors
- Contractors complete CE in even-numbered years; journeypersons in odd-numbered years
- Retain certificates of completion for at least 4 years for DCP audit

Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing plumbing work without a valid DCP license is a Class B misdemeanor in Connecticut, punishable by up to six months in prison, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. Unlicensed contractors cannot enforce contracts or collect payment through legal action.
