Connecticut Unlimited Heating, Piping and Cooling Contractor License (S-1)
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) issues the S-1 Unlimited Heating, Piping and Cooling Contractor license, which authorizes the holder to perform all heating, piping, and cooling work as defined in Connecticut General Statutes Section 20-330. This is the highest-level HVAC license in Connecticut.
What This License Authorizes
S-1 license holders may perform, supervise, and contract for all heating, piping, and cooling work including HVAC system installation, boiler work, refrigeration, air conditioning, heat pumps, ductwork, hydronic systems, and all related mechanical installations in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
Examination and Experience Requirements
Applicants must pass both the Connecticut Business and Law Exam and a Trade-Specific HVAC Exam. To qualify, applicants must have at least two years of experience as a licensed S-2 journeyperson or equivalent experience and training, including completion of an approved HVAC education program with at least 600 hours of instruction.
Continuing Education
Connecticut does not currently require continuing education for Heating, Piping, and Cooling license holders. However, licensees should stay current with code changes and industry best practices.

Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing HVAC work without a valid DCP license is a Class B misdemeanor in Connecticut, punishable by up to six months in prison, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. The DCP may also impose civil penalties and issue cease-and-desist orders.
