Connecticut Unlimited Fire Protection Sprinkler Contractor License (F-1)

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) issues the F-1 Unlimited Fire Protection Sprinkler Contractor license, which authorizes the holder to perform all fire protection sprinkler system work as defined in the Connecticut General Statutes.

What This License Authorizes

F-1 license holders may perform, supervise, and contract for all fire protection sprinkler system work, including design, installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of automatic fire sprinkler systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

Examination and Experience Requirements

Applicants must pass both the Connecticut Business and Law Exam and a Trade-Specific Fire Protection Exam. To qualify for the F-1 examination, applicants must have at least two years of experience as a licensed F-2 journeyperson or equivalent experience and training in fire protection sprinkler work.

Continuing Education

Connecticut does not currently require continuing education for Fire Protection Sprinkler license holders. However, contractors should stay current with NFPA standards and Connecticut fire code updates.

Renewal Process

  • Renewal Period: Annually
  • Renewal Fee: $150
  • Renew Online: Through the eLicense portal at elicense.ct.gov

Consequences of Operating Without a License

Installing or servicing fire protection sprinkler systems without a valid DCP license is a Class B misdemeanor in Connecticut, punishable by up to six months in prison, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. Given the life-safety nature of fire protection work, the DCP takes unlicensed activity in this trade very seriously.
