Connecticut Unlimited Elevator Contractor License (R-1)
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) issues the R-1 Unlimited Elevator Contractor license, which authorizes the holder to perform all elevator installation, maintenance, and repair work as defined in the Connecticut General Statutes.
What This License Authorizes
R-1 license holders may perform, supervise, and contract for all elevator work including installation, maintenance, repair, and modernization of elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, moving walks, and other vertical transportation equipment in all building types.
Examination and Experience Requirements
Applicants must pass both the Connecticut Business and Law Exam and a Trade-Specific Elevator Exam. Applicants must demonstrate substantial experience in elevator construction and maintenance, typically through completion of a registered apprenticeship program and journeyperson experience.
Continuing Education
Connecticut does not currently require continuing education for Elevator license holders. However, contractors should stay current with ASME/ANSI elevator safety codes and Connecticut building code updates.

Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing elevator work without a valid DCP license is a Class B misdemeanor in Connecticut, punishable by up to six months in prison, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. Elevator work is safety-critical, and the DCP actively investigates unlicensed activity in this trade.
