Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Colorado State Plumbing Contractor License
The Colorado State Plumbing Board — under DORA's Division of Professions and Occupations — registers plumbing contractors statewide. The registration covers the business entity; the responsible party must hold an active Master Plumber license, which requires 5 years (8,500 hours) of practical experience and passage of the state plumbing exam.
Key deadlines and fees
All plumbing contractor registrations expire on February 28 of odd-numbered years, regardless of when the registration was originally issued. The application/registration fee is $210. Verify the current renewal fee and any delinquency fee directly at dpo.colorado.gov — the initial and renewal amounts may differ.
The grace period for late renewal is 60 days past the February 28 deadline, per 3 CCR 720-1. After the 60-day window closes, the registration cannot be renewed through the standard path.
Continuing education
The statute (C.R.S. 12-155-112) requires 8 hours of CE per 12-month period, totaling 16 hours per biennial cycle. Within each 24-month period, at least 4 of those hours must be code-related; safety training counts for no more than 2 hours. Providers must be approved by the State Plumbing Board.
Insurance and compliance
Workers' compensation coverage is required under C.R.S. 8-40-202 for any business with employees. Verify general liability insurance requirements against the current contractor registration application at dpo.colorado.gov — GL requirements for the contractor registration itself should be confirmed directly with the Board.
Criminal exposure for unlicensed work
Performing plumbing work without an active license violates C.R.S. 12-155-122 and triggers penalties under C.R.S. 12-20-407(1)(a) — a class 2 misdemeanor punishable under C.R.S. 18-1.3-501, with potential jail time and fines for each violation.
