The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) issues the C-51 Structural Steel Contractor license. CSLB defines the trade as one that fabricates and erects structural steel shapes and plates, of any profile, perimeter or cross-section, that are or may be used as structural members for buildings and structures — including the riveting, welding, rigging and metal roofing systems necessary to perform this work.

When a CSLB license is required

CSLB says a California contractor license is required when:

Requirements

Experience: At least 4 years of journey-level or equivalent experience within the last 10 years

Scope of Work

A C-51 contractor fabricates and erects load-bearing steel — wide-flange columns and beams, plate girders, steel-deck assemblies, moment frames, braced frames, the riveted, bolted, and welded connections that hold them, and the rigging needed to put them in place. Structural-steel-supported metal roofing systems are explicitly in scope. Reinforcing steel for concrete is a separate C-50 classification, and ornamental metals are a C-23 classification.
