Vermont Lead-Safe RRPM Firm License

Any company that hires workers to do renovation, repair, painting, or maintenance that disturbs lead-based paint in pre-1978 buildings must hold this firm license from the Vermont Department of Health — even if each individual worker holds their own certification.

Who Needs This License

The firm license applies to businesses (not individual workers). You need it if your company contracts for RRPM work in pre-1978 housing, rental properties, or child-occupied facilities in Vermont. The individual supervisor on-site needs a separate Lead-Safe RRPM Supervisor license; the firm must hold this one regardless.

The Supervisor Requirement

Every licensed RRPM firm must employ at least one person holding a current Lead-Safe RRPM Supervisor license, and that supervisor must remain on-site during all RRPM work. Firm certification does not substitute for the supervisor's individual license.

Training Behind the Supervisor License

Supervisors must complete two courses before your firm can qualify:

  • 8-hour Initial RRP training from an EPA-accredited provider (certificate valid 5 years)
  • 2-hour Vermont IRC Practices training from the Vermont Asbestos and Lead Regulatory Program (certificate valid 5 years)

Both certificates must stay current — expired supervisor credentials put the firm out of compliance.

Insurance Requirement

To obtain and renew the firm license, your business must submit proof of effective liability insurance coverage or a surety bond of at least $300,000.

Fee and Renewal

  • License fee: $300 for a 5-year term
  • Apply and renew at the Vermont Department of Health's licenses and certificates page

Enforcement

The Vermont Department of Health administers Vermont's EPA-authorized RRP program and handles all enforcement. The Department investigates complaints and may take action against unlicensed firms.
