How to handle it

What to handle first.

  1. 1

Confirm what rule you are actually dealing with

Check City of Austin Building and Trade Contractor Services first so you know whether this is a license, a firm certification, or a training rule before you plan around it.

    Open official source
  2. 2

Use the approved training or certification path

Use the official source and its approved providers, trainers, or certifying organizations instead of relying on third-party summaries alone.

  3. 3

Keep the proof where the crew can find it

Store the card, firm record, or completion proof where you can show it when a jobsite, employer, supplier, or inspector asks.

Austin Contractor Registration Requirements

This page is a factual guide to Austin contractor registration. It is not a Texas state general contractor license page.

What Austin requires

  • Austin says general contractors, trade contractors, and homeowners acting as contractors must be registered with Building and Trade Contractor Services before they can be assigned to covered building or trade permits
  • General contractors must have an Austin Build + Connect (AB+C) portal account before they can register and be assigned to a building permit
  • Trade contractors also need an AB+C account and must submit registration information through the city workflow before being assigned to a trade permit

General contractors vs. trade contractors

  • Austin says general contractors register once and are not required to update their city registration annually unless their name, address, or agents change
  • Austin says licensed professional trade contractors register once but must update their city registration annually when their trade-license information changes
  • Austin treats right-of-way contractors through a separate city workflow, so do not assume this page covers every excavation or sidewalk registration

What to prepare

  • AB+C portal account information
  • Letter of authorization and business-contact details requested by the city web forms
  • Current state-license information if you are registering as a licensed mechanical, electrical, or plumbing contractor

Important notes

  • Texas does not issue a statewide general contractor license, so Austin city registration is a permit-assignment requirement rather than a substitute state license
  • This page covers city registration mechanics, not permit fees or project-specific plan review requirements
  • If your business information or license holder changes, update the city record before trying to activate another permit
