Texas Plumbing License (Master Plumber)
The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) regulates all plumbing work in the state. A Master Plumber license is required to contract for plumbing work and supervise other plumbers.
Requirements
- Experience: Minimum of 4 years as a Journeyman Plumber or equivalent qualifying experience
- Examination: Must pass the Master Plumber exam
- Responsible Master Plumber (RMP): Each plumbing company must designate an RMP. The RMP designation requires additional insurance, but the individual Master Plumber license does not.
Renewal Information
- Renewal Period: Annual (every 12 months)
- Renewal Fee: $75
- Continuing Education: 6 hours required each renewal cycle
- Late Penalty: $75 additional fee for late renewal
- Grace Period: 60 days after expiration
- Late Renewal Penalty: $60
- Application Fee: $60
Scope of Work
Master plumbers can:
- Contract for plumbing work
- Pull plumbing permits
- Supervise journeyman and apprentice plumbers
- Install and repair water supply and drainage systems
- Work on gas piping systems
Important Notes
Texas requires plumbing licenses statewide regardless of municipality. The TSBPE has been proposed for consolidation under TDLR in multiple legislative sessions. Check for current agency structure.
