North Dakota Water Conditioning Contractor License


The North Dakota State Plumbing Board issues the Water Conditioning Contractor license under NDCC Chapter 43-18.1 for businesses that plan and manage the installation, alteration, and repair of water conditioning equipment. Water conditioning systems treat water to alter its mineral, chemical, or bacterial content.


What This License Authorizes


Water Conditioning Contractors may plan, manage, and supervise the installation and repair of water treatment and conditioning equipment including water softeners, filtration systems, reverse osmosis systems, and other devices that alter the mineral, chemical, or bacterial content of water. Contractors may supervise licensed water conditioning installers.


Experience and Examination Requirements


Applicants must be at least 21 years old and have one year (1,900 hours) of experience as a licensed water conditioning installer in North Dakota or another state with reciprocity. Applicants must pass the state examination with a score of 80% or higher. Licensed contractors from states with reciprocal agreements may qualify for licensure by reciprocity.

Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Annually, expiring December 31
  • Renewal Fee: $40 (covers both installer and contractor if holding both)
  • Lapsed License: Contact the ND State Plumbing Board for reinstatement procedures if license has expired

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing water conditioning contracting work without a valid license is a violation under NDCC 43-18.1. The Board may impose fines and refer violations for prosecution.
