North Dakota Master Electrician License
The North Dakota State Electrical Board (NDSEB) issues the Master Electrician license to qualified individuals who demonstrate advanced knowledge and experience in the electrical trade. A master electrician license is also required to operate as an electrical contractor in North Dakota.
What This License Authorizes
Master Electricians may plan, lay out, and supervise the installation, alteration, and repair of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment. They may also operate as electrical contractors (with additional Secretary of State registration) and supervise journeyman electricians and apprentices.
Examination Requirements
Applicants must pass the NDSEB master electrician examination. The exam fee is $50. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of two years of experience as a licensed journeyman electrician.

- Reinstatement Fee: $50 (equal to annual fee for expired licenses)
Continuing Education
- 8 hours annually required for renewal
- 4 hours must cover updates and changes to the National Electrical Code (NEC)
- 4 hours must cover topics related to the electrical industry, including North Dakota laws, rules, and wiring standards

- Renewal Period: Annually, due by April 30
- Renewal Fee: $50
- Reinstatement Fee: $50 for expired licenses
- Continuing Education: 8 hours must be on file with NDSEB before renewal
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing electrical work without a valid NDSEB license is a Class B misdemeanor under NDCC 43-09. The Board may revoke or suspend licenses, impose civil penalties, and refer violations for prosecution.
