North Dakota Sewer and Water Installer License


The North Dakota State Plumbing Board issues the Sewer and Water Installer license for individuals who perform hands-on sewer and water main installation work. This license is a prerequisite for the Sewer and Water Contractor license and allows holders to work under contractor supervision.


What This License Authorizes


Sewer and Water Installers may perform the physical installation, repair, and maintenance of sewer lines and water mains outside building foundations under the oversight of a licensed sewer and water contractor. They work on trenching, pipe laying, and connection to municipal water and sewer systems.


Experience and Examination Requirements


Applicants must complete two years (3,400 hours) as a registered sewer and water apprentice in North Dakota, or complete an accredited plumbing trade school course of at least 9 months (1,020 hours). Applicants must pass the state examination with a score of 70% or higher.

  • Grace Period: May renew within one year of expiration without retesting

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing sewer and water installation work without a valid license is a violation under NDCC 43-18. The Board may impose penalties and refer violations for prosecution.
