North Dakota Sewer and Water Contractor License
The North Dakota State Plumbing Board issues the Sewer and Water Contractor license for businesses that install, repair, and maintain sewer lines and water mains outside of building foundations. This is a separate license from the plumber license and covers underground utility work.
What This License Authorizes
Sewer and Water Contractors may install, repair, and maintain public and private sewer lines and water mains outside the building foundation. This includes trenching, pipe laying, connection to municipal systems, and related excavation work for water and sewer infrastructure.
Experience and Examination Requirements
Applicants must have one year (1,700 hours) of experience as a licensed sewer and water installer in North Dakota. Applicants must pass the state examination with a score of 80% or higher.

- General Liability Insurance: Required for contracting operations
- Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees

- Grace Period: May renew within one year of expiration without retesting
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing sewer and water installation work without a valid license is a violation under NDCC 43-18. The Board may impose penalties and refer violations for prosecution.
