The fine print is here.
North Dakota Power Limited Electrician License
The North Dakota State Electrical Board (NDSEB) issues the Power Limited Electrician license for installing, servicing, and repairing power limited systems — defined as Class II and Class III circuits under the National Electrical Code (NDCC §43-09-01(14)).
What This License Authorizes
Power limited electricians work on NEC Class II/III circuit systems: fire alarm, security, telecommunications, structured cabling, and sound systems. This license does not cover wiring for electric light, heat, or power — that work requires a journeyman or master electrician license. The NDSEB issues this license in three categories:
- Contracting — operate independently as a power limited electrical contractor
- Electrician of Record — serve as responsible party on permitted jobs under a contracting entity
- Non-Contracting — perform installations under a licensed contractor’s supervision
Qualifying: Experience and Exam
Applicants must complete 6,000 hours of experience (not less than 2.5 years) registered as a power limited apprentice under a supervising contracting power limited, master, or power limited electrician of record. An examination is required; contact NDSEB at (701) 328-9522 to confirm current fees and scheduling.
Fees and Renewal
Annual renewal fee: $50, due by April 30 each year. Licenses expire April 30 annually. Submit renewal to NDSEB with continuing education documentation:
- 8 hours of CE per biennium (2-year cycle) under NDCC §43-09-15.1
- At least 4 hours must cover National Electrical Code updates
- Remaining 4 hours: board-prescribed electrical industry topics
Expired license reinstatement fee: $50.
Consequences of Operating Without a License
The NDSEB may revoke or suspend licenses, impose civil penalties, and refer violations for prosecution under NDCC Chapter 43-09. Advertising electrical services without a valid license is a Class B misdemeanor under NDCC §43-09-09.2.
