North Dakota Master Plumber License


The North Dakota State Plumbing Board issues the Master Plumber license to experienced plumbing professionals who have passed the state examination and met experience requirements. A master plumber license is required to operate a plumbing contracting business in North Dakota.


What This License Authorizes


Master Plumbers may plan, design, install, alter, and repair plumbing systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. They may operate plumbing contracting businesses, pull plumbing permits, and supervise journeyman plumbers and apprentices.


Examination Requirements


Applicants must pass the North Dakota master plumber examination. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and have a minimum of two years and 3,400 hours of experience as a licensed journeyman plumber.

Continuing Education


  • 4 hours per two-year cycle (by December 31 of even-numbered years)

  • Late Fee: $50 additional penalty for late renewals
  • Continuing Education: 4 hours per two-year cycle must be completed
  • Lapsed License: Licenses expired for over one year may require retaking the state plumbing exam

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing plumbing work without a valid North Dakota State Plumbing Board license is a Class B misdemeanor under NDCC 43-18. The Board may revoke or suspend licenses and impose fines for violations of plumbing licensing laws.
