North Dakota Journeyman Electrician License


The North Dakota State Electrical Board (NDSEB) issues the Journeyman Electrician license. This is the standard working electrician license required to perform electrical installations, alterations, and repairs in North Dakota.


What This License Authorizes


Journeyman Electricians may install, alter, and repair electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment under the general supervision of a master electrician or independently within the scope of their license. They work on residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems.


Examination Requirements


Applicants must pass the NDSEB journeyman electrician examination. The exam fee is $25. Applicants must have completed 8,000 hours of supervised electrical apprenticeship experience.

  • Reinstatement Fee: $25 (equal to annual fee for expired licenses)

Continuing Education


  • 8 hours annually required for renewal
  • 4 hours must cover updates and changes to the National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • 4 hours must cover topics related to the electrical industry, including North Dakota laws, rules, and wiring standards

Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Annually, due by March 31
  • Renewal Fee: $25
  • Reinstatement Fee: $25 for expired licenses
  • Continuing Education: 8 hours must be on file with NDSEB before renewal

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing electrical work without a valid NDSEB license is a Class B misdemeanor under NDCC 43-09. The Board may revoke or suspend licenses and impose civil penalties.
