Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Nevada B-6 Commercial Remodeling License
The Nevada State Contractors Board lists B-6 Commercial Remodeling as a separate Class B general-building classification. Contractors using this classification work inside Nevada's statewide NSCB licensing system, but the remodeling scope is distinct from B-7 Residential Remodeling.
What This License Covers
NSCB's classification list identifies B-6 as Commercial Remodeling. Use this category when the scope is remodeling or improving existing commercial structures rather than detached single-family or other qualifying residential remodeling projects.
Application Requirements
- Application Fee: $300 non-refundable application processing fee
- License Fee: $600 due when the license is issued
- Examinations: The qualifying individual must pass the Business and Law (CMS) examination. NSCB says a trade exam may also be required depending on the classification requested or any waiver granted.
- Experience: The trade qualifying individual must show at least four full years of experience within the 15 years immediately before the application as a journeyman, supervising employee, or contractor in the requested classification.
- Financial Statement: NSCB requires a financial statement, with the exact statement level tied to the monetary limit requested.
Bond and Insurance Requirements
- Contractor Bond: NSCB sets the bond amount at approval. The Board says the bond can range from $1,000 to $500,000 based on the classification, monetary limit, financial responsibility, experience, and character of the applicant.
- Workers' Compensation: Proof of workers' compensation coverage is part of the final licensing conditions unless the business qualifies for an exemption.
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Nevada contractor licenses are issued for 2 years and renew every 2 years.
- Renewal Fee: $600 biennial license fee.
- Continuing Education: Nevada does not publish a general state-level continuing education requirement for NSCB contractor license renewal.
Scope Note
If the work fits Nevada's new residential-remodeling classification, use the B-7 Residential Remodeling path instead of assuming B-6 covers both categories.
Penalties for Unlicensed Work
Nevada's contractor licensing laws can carry significant penalties. A first offense can be prosecuted as a misdemeanor with a $1,000 to $4,000 fine and up to 6 months in jail. Later violations can escalate, and Nevada law also allows additional fine enhancement tied to the value of contracts where work began or money was received.
