Mississippi Municipal and Public Works Contractor License
The Mississippi State Board of Contractors (MSBOC) issues the Municipal and Public Works Contractor license, a major commercial classification covering water and sewer infrastructure, treatment plants, and associated public works construction.
What This License Authorizes
Municipal and Public Works Contractors may perform construction and maintenance of water and sewer pipelines and plants, and associated excavation, grading, and paving. This major classification encompasses all related specialty classifications within the Municipal and Public Works category.
Financial Requirements
- Net Worth: Minimum $50,000 net worth required, demonstrated through CPA-reviewed or audited financial statements
- General Liability Insurance: Minimum $300,000 per occurrence and $600,000 aggregate required
- Workers' Compensation: Required if you have five or more employees
Examination Requirements
Applicants must pass the Mississippi Law and Business Management exam and a Municipal and Public Works trade exam, both administered by PSI. Each exam costs $120 and requires a score of 70% to pass.

Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing municipal or public works construction in Mississippi without a valid MSBOC license is a misdemeanor, carrying fines from $100 to $5,000 per offense and/or imprisonment of 30 to 60 days. Unlicensed contractors lose mechanics lien rights and cannot pursue legal action to collect payment.
